Space Trek is the TRS-80 Color Computer sequel to author Jake Commander's previous TRS-80 Model 1/3 version of Star Trek (version 4.0) that was sold by The Programmer's Guild around 1980. This original version version featured "Command Preview" and "Realistic Combat Effects". I am not entirely sure what that means as I have never played the original. I can say that his 1983 Coco version features 64x32 8 color graphics and text, Extended BASIC sound effects, and plays in real time (with sound and animation attempting to simulate the standby lights and sound of the original TV show, and Klingons come and attack the player even if the player is just sitting there and not entering any commands). The Coco version was originally published in the May 1983 Color Computer Magazine, and Jake started selling it through his Command Software the next month for those who didn't want to type the whole thing in.

As with most games of this type, the main goal is to clear the galaxy of Klingons. This features good sound effects and even some low resolution animations (of a Klingon ship being destroyed, for instance. Like others, it features a number of single digit numeric commands (and sub-commands for things like using the ship's computer). The direction of the ship and photon torpedoes is done with numeric values (and both warp drive and impulse engines are done from the same Set Course command, which is different than some other versions). One nice thing about this version is that since it is real time, each time you hit a command key, it displays what that key means on the right side, and doesn't commit to that command until the player hits ENTER (so it is a version of built in help). This extends to figuring out directions as well.

While not as extensive graphics or sound as the Adventure International version Star Trek III 4.0, it only requires half the RAM (16K vs. 32K), and the real time aspect makes it very fun to play.

Interesting side note on the history of it's author Jake Commander. Jake was originally from Britain and he started as a rock musician, playing with famous bands like Electric Light Orchestra, George Harrison and Elton John before getting the computer bug in the late 1970's with the original TRS-80. He became a columnist and software author for a variety of magazines (80 US Journal, 80 Micro, Hot Coco, Color Computer Magazine) and authored several books (including for later computers like the Macintosh). He moved to the USA early in his micro home computer career. He got into a bit of legal trouble in 2014 due to one day of hacking he had done with Anonymous a few years earlier (and in between his family had moved back to England ), and spent a very short amount of time in jail (10 days) before returning to England and reuniting with his family.
