Kick Guy is based on the arcade game Kick Man (by Midway in 1981). In this game, you move your player left and right on the bottom trying to catch the balloons on the top of your head. If you can't make it to the balloon on time to pop it on your head, but can get to it before it hits the floor, you can kick it (which causes it to zig-zag up to the top, and then come down again) and get another chance to pop it.
