Subject: CoCo's Speed Racer Date: Sat, 15 Feb 2003 17:40:08 -0500 From: Stacy & Steven Hirsch To: curtisboyle@sasktel.net Curtis, I am Steven Hirsch, author of "Speed Racer", published by MichTron. I doubt that my media still works, and would love for my children to enjoy the game. For the mathematically inclined, some interesting design techniques were used. The 6809E CPU has a multiplication instruction, but not division. This made elaborate 3-D animation challenging. The solution was to store a table of reciprocals. Even with that, I couldn't get the 30 frames/sec. needed for 200 MPH, so two screen images are computed 3x/sec with alternating colors for the road stripes. This accounts for the jerkiness in the animation during quick turns. By the way, with the growing popularity of Java cell phones, we've come full circle (pardon the pun) with "low resolution" games.
