Thomas defected from the Hudson’s Bay Company to the rival North West Company (two trading companies fighting for territory) on October 2, 1804. This greatly upset his father-in-law, who wrote to Governor McNab about it. Thomas was also apparently fired from NBC within a year or two, and then, abandoning his wife and four children, left on the ship Beaver on August 22, 1805, sailing for Quebec.
