Sigh, Yes and No. We have OS source but encountered only 1 kernel bug, which Microware fixed at our expense... Support for libraries has been terrible, and of course we have no source for those and ever since UCC appeared the stock answer to every problem is "Oh, that's fixed in Ultra-C". That's fine, but IMHO UCC is not yet a usable product. I did a search on Ultra-C message and noticed you have had a few bumps with it yourself. Our biggest fear was that the OS vendor would disappear off the face of the earth, which Microware has not done yet, though I think their foray into CD-I will leave them very wounded in the long run. Wittman Computer Products William L. Wittman, Jr. 873 Johnson Road Churchville, NY 14428-9305 USA February 28, 1994 First let me introduce myself, my name is Bill Wittman, Jr. Most of you have seen me or met me at the CoCoFests over the past 5 years, working in either the Interactive Media Systems or BlackHawk Enterprises booths. Recently I have come up with an idea to keep the 6809/03 to 68xxx OSK Community together. Now I would like to introduce "The Community Source Catalog" to you. I am collecting advertisements from magazine publishers and also software & hardware products from vendors of the Color Computer, the MM/1, and even the System IV & V. Ad rates are $50 for the first page, (a page is a full 8 1/2" by 11"), and $10 for each additional page. There is no extra cost for ad setup unless your ad is that complex. Each ad will run for the two printings for the spring/summer and winter/fall editions. Your ad may be changed at any time, but it needs to be at least 1 month before set deadlines. There is a subscription rate of $8.00 US for the two printings or $5.00 US for one printing within a year. If you have an advertisement in the catalog, you will recieve issues free for the term of your ad. Our existing controller is responsible for PID control of heaters via analog I/O, as well as sequencing of digital and analog I/O. The main problem with this controller is that is proprietary, i.e. 1. Single Source Supplier 2. Closed hardware architecture 3. Expensive 4. Proprietary programming tools 5. Lack of compatability between new programming tools and older hardware & vice versa. Altogether, YUK!! The current favourite replacement system in my opinion has got to be a VME platform running under OS/9 which means:- 1. Industry standard, therefore open architecture & multi-source. 2. 68030 based conroller for the same price as our current 68000 based system 3. Programed in C & C++, hooray!! I'd really like to hear from anybody who is using an OS9/VME in a similar application ( or indeed OS9 users in general) who have any hints and pitfalls to avoid for an OS/2 C/C++ Software Engineer starting out on the OS9 road. Also, how good is the timing accuracy and repeatability under OS9?? Thanks, Rich. I suspect most OS-9/VME programmers are pretty busy . There used to be a fellow here who used OS-9 systems (but not VME) to control oil-well heaters, btw. What kind of heaters are you talking about? Someone else has done chemical factory pressure monitoring/control. Here at work we use both PEP and Motorola 68030/68040 VME boxes. They're used to coordinate hundreds of standalone video lottery terminals which contain games such as bingo, poker, keno, etc. Currently we still use the old K&R C compiler from Microware, although the latest Ultra C (ANSI) from them is looking much better. Other people simply use the freely available GNU C (and C++ ?) compilers. Microware is supposed to be working on a C++ compiler. If you're new to OS-9, there are two books you should buy. One is available from Microware but for some reason I can't think of its name!! (Guys, help me out!) It's a good starter example book. The other is called "The OS-9 Guru, Part I". Again, I can't seem to find the address for ordering it. Guys? This one goes into great detail on OS-9's guts. best - kkevin #: 19832 S14/misc/info/Soapbox 22-Mar-94 06:51:00 Sb: #19808-#Process Control & OS9 Fm: Bill Dickhaus 70325,523 To: richard wheeler 100317,1415 Rich, The books Kevin mentioned are: OS-9 Insights, second edition, by Peter Dibble. We had a house fire 2 days before Christmas 1993. Smoke and heat damage to my 6809 system. Have been trying for the past couple of days to bring the system up after cleaning it with no luck. I have the feeling that the DCB4 has been damaged. Anyway, I used this system to do assembling for my 6802 processor cards that I use for controller applications. I recently "upgraded" to 68020. I'm needing an assembler for 6802 and 6809 that runs on OSK. Anyone got one?? I was using the CSC6801 package from Southeast Media. And while I have your attention... I could use a bit of help in trying to troubleshoot the DCB4. I'm really intent on trying to resurrect the system so I can recover most of my source code files and business records over to the OSK system. Anyone have a DCB4 available???
