Hello Bruce
The reason for being 18 times faster than OS/2 and not 4.5 times is because
we(os-9-peoble) call it for os-half. Sorry just joking. OS-9 is the most
widely used 'hard-real-time' operating system for the 68K-family and for some
years ago also the 6809. It is one of the only that is selfhosted, which means
you can connect a floppy/harddrive and edit - compile -debug directly on your
target. A special version called RTOS is the hart/kernel in the CDI-players
from Philips. It is the second most sold real-time ope- rating system in the
World. Only the PDP-11's have sold more, and they are about to exit the field
due to age. It is also quite popular amongst pri vate people, because it is
multitasking,multiuser,realtime,romable and unixlike(on the io-system). I could
go on for ever......

Hi all!
I'm new to OS-9, and this forum. My new company is redesigning its user
interface to be multi-tasking (from DOS), and we're going to switch to an
operating system.
We want to do real-time data acquistion (worst case: 600-700 Hz), display the
data graphically, have a GUI, etc., etc. etc. My question is this: while I
don't much care for Windows, should we go with the US flow, or should we go
Motorola and OS-9.
I expect a biased answer, since I'm asking this group, and I doubt that many
people out there even know about OS-9. I've been working as a software engineer
for 11 years, and I just heard about it. However, I'm leaning towards it, and
I'd like any reactions, facts, opinions, whatever about it.
Thanks for your time,

There are a lot of embedded applications out there using OS-9, but you'd never
know it. There are good gui's available (g-windows, mgr, etc) and good solid
support (even though you do have to search out suppliers). Have you called
Microware and asked for some of their literature. Their 'OS-9 Catalogue' has a
lot of general and tech-type information in it.

OS9 is a multi-user, multi-tasking realtime operating system developed by
Microware for Motrola processors (6809, and 68xxx). OS9 is a lot like Unix,
only better, IMO. OS9 is used quite a bit in embedded systems, a notable
example is the Phillip's CDI player, which uses a modified version of OS9. For

I anyone aware of a known problem with using MS-DOS's DBLSPACE on a system
which is also running OS9K?
I have two hard drives now, a Conner 500M as drive C and a Seagate 120M as
drive D.
I have OS9K installed on drive D, which I can access and use just fine by
booting from the original installation floppy.
I can install MS-DOS on drive C and go back and for just fine.
UNTIL, I install DBLSPACE!!!! I can install DBLSPACE, create a compressed drive
E which uses free space on drive C and that works fine, UNTIL I then boot OS9K
with the installation floppy and run a directory command on /hd1.
With the VERY NEXT boot of MS-DOS, DBLSPACE refuses to mount drive E saying it
is too corrupted. And sure enough, the new 6.2 SCANDISK utility reports all
kinds of errors on BOTH drive C and E and the only recourse is to reformat and
start over with MS-DOS. OS9K's drive still appears to be unaffected and working
just fine.
Any thoughts, comments, ideas?
(Yes, I have just sent EMail to Microware's hotline, but don't expect a reply
until Monday or Tuesday.)

Sb: followup on os9k problem
Fm: Zack Sessions 71532,1555
To: all
After playing a little more, I have come to the conclusion that DBLSPACE is
not helping to cause the problem I am having.
I re-installed DOS 6, and upgraded to 6.2, ran SCANDISK and all was well.
I booted up OS9K from the installation floppy and did the following:
tmode nopause
chd /hd1
dir -ure
The directory display runs for a second or so, and then returns the error:
dir: can't open "CMDS/BOOTOBJS". Error #000:219
You know, of course, that a 219 is an E_IBA, illegal memory block address.
I immediately rebooted DOS. Since I had not yet installed DBLSPACE, there was
no indication from the boot that there was a problem, but a manual run of
SCANDISK on drive C showed the same type of problem I was seeing before.
SCANDISK reports that the backup copy of the disk's FAT was wrong and it
reported that a file was reporting its size incorrectly.
I rebooted OS9K and tried the same commands as before, with IDENTICAL results,
the 219 error on CMDS/BOOTOBJS. This time I recalled the command with a ^A and
this time the 219 error occured when it was trying to open CMDS, ie, the error
message was
dir: can't open "CMDS". Error #000:219
Running a dir with no switches ran OK and displayed the files in the root of
/hd1, but any subsequent use of the -r switch gave the 219 error on the CMDS
directory. What is strange is this. I then did:
chd /d0
chd /hd1
dir -ure
and it worked perfectly!! All the way through the entire file structure!!
So, bottom line here is that just getting a SINGLE 219 error somehow corrupts
something on the C drive, but I have no way of predicting WHEN I will get a
219 error, or what is causing it.
When I had just one 120M hd and it was partitioned 50/50, I ran and used OS9K
for weeks with no problems, that is, with the same 16M of memory I am using
now. The ONLY difference is that I have no OS9K partition on drive C and all
of drive D is an OS-9000 parition.

The following are some excerpts from the 1/18/94 article in The
Wall Street Journal by Staff Reporter John J. Keller. Page B1.
"Little Microware Aims to Be a Multimedia Giant"
First it gives some background and then...
"Little-known Microware has just landed a coveted piece of
business. BELL ATLANTIC Corp., the regional Bell company, expects
to distribute an interactive service to 10 million households by
the turn of the century. It has placed orders for set-top boxes
from three suppliers. All the boxes, in turn, rely on Microwares
OS/9 software."
More background about what and who Microware is and then later in
the article...
"Microware's OS/9 went head-to-head with a prototype from
Microsoft called Modular Windows in a test by Bell Atlantic, says
Arthur Orduna, a Microware marketing manager. he brags that OS/9
beat its rival. A Microsoft spokeswoman doesn't dispute this
account."
There is more to the article that I quoted here but it is
important that Microware landed this contract for many reasons.
It assures Microwares place in the future and thru them ours. By
making OS/9 so visible it will make it easier for all of us to
justify OS/9 to new users. The influx of money into Microware
from this deal will likely help Microware provide new and
important software in the future for all of us. It will also
quiet those nay sayers who proclaim the demise of OS/9.
Whether it will directly help those of us in the market now is yet
to be seen. However in my mind this deal can only help to expand
the market for OS/9 and therefore the slice of the pie that each
vendor has can only increase.
All in all this is a milestone for Microware and I congratulate
all of those who worked long and hard to put this deal together.
A hearty WELL DONE!

Steve, I am a COCO owner who relies exclusively on OS-9 for his 6809 box. On
the other end of the bench is a VLB 486DX2/66 loaded with software development
tools, and I use that one to make my living on.
OS-9 (and OS-9000) is a good multitasking operating system with real-time
interrupt servicing. It is also multi-user, and that makes it unusual. You
don't usually see a multi-user, multitasking operating system that can process
its interrupts in realtime.
However, as much as I hate the OS/2 operating system, it is possibly a
best-choice for real-time data acquisition systems that need to multitask. My
reasoning is as follows: Windows, though it does multitask, does it in a
non-preemtive manner. A task runs until it either finishes or surrenders
control so that other tasks may have a slice of the CPU's time. OS-9, while a
good possible choice for data acquisition, is not as well supported by third
party vendors as OS/2 is, though that isn't saying much. UNIX is pretty much
out because it doesn't process interrupts in realtime. The only real drawback
is that OS/2 is a single user operating system, and that if anything goes wierd
with it it's harder to track down than it is with OS-9.
Most of the industrial control devices I've had to work with over the last two
years have been based on OS/2 1.3 Extended, for whatever its worth.

Simple....
OS2 is a windowed, multi-tasking operating system for PC class machines. It's
sort of like Windows, but pays a little better attention to multi-tasking, and
has direct control of the machinem (as I understand it) - Windows sits on TOP
of DOS...)
OS9 is a multi-tasking operating system that's very similar to Unix. It was
originally for the Motorola 6809 chip, but was later extended to the Motorola
680x0 family. Now they also have a version for 386 and 486 machines called
OS-9000.

Having ressurected my Coco II with all the trimmings from my
attic into my den and with a little prodding from my son, I have
it up and running OS-9 Level 1.02. Surprising how my memory has
held up over the last 11 years. But, my OS-9 operating system
manuals disappeared at some point and I need a little help with
some rough edges.
My main problem is the parameters in the /DO/SYS/PASSWORD file.
After stringing a few wires, we have been successful getting a 3
user system going. The two terminals are a R.S. Model III which
also got dragged down from the attic and a 486 PC in my office
downstairs (when I'm not hacking I consult in the real world -
I know, ugh!, but its a living).
Anyway, after we login from the terminals, we don't have much
access to the system and a bunch of random CHD's and CHX's
sometimes yield something and sometimes don't.
What are the various parameters in the PASSWORD file? Seems the
first one is either blank or a user name, then a comma or two,
then a number 0, 1, 2, or 3, then maybe /DO/CMDS, a couple more
comma's and a single . within two of the commas.
If someone would explain to me each field in this file, my son
(at the ripe old age of 10) would really have something going.
Many thanks for the help . .

The password fields (from my OSK manuals, but I think they are the same on
level II) are:
USER NAME,
PASSWORD,
USER ID NUMBER,
INITIAL PROCESS PRIORITY,
INITIAL EXEC DIRECTORY,
INITIAL DATA DIRECTORY,
INITIAL PROGRAM
Each field is separated by a comma.
The single dot you see in your file is a reference to the current data or exec
directory.
A typical line might be:

I wonder if anyone here has ever been able to get The Tandy Coco
version of Dynacalc 1.00.00 to run on a non-Coco terminal. I
remember about 10 years ago I was able to run it on a Coco with
a Wordpak II in 80 columns, but since my son has ressurected the
Coco from the attic and we have set up a couple terminals (a
Radio Shack Model III and a 486 PC) neither one is able to run
Dynacalc. The opening Dynacalc screen on the terminals is an
endless stream of the Dynacalc opening screen without any
formatting and then the worksheet column and row headers come up
consectively followed bu a never ending stream of ASCII
characters.
I downloaded a couple patches from this forum, the VT100.TRM
file drops Dynacalc back to the OS9 prompt, it is for version
4.xx. I patched Dynacalc.Trm myself to provide the # of columns
and rows, add linefeeds, etc. but somewhere else in Dynacalc
there seems to be something to prevent it from running on ASCII
terminals or anything else we can emulate.
Any help would be greatly appreciated . .

Stretching memory here, but I _think_ that the COCO versions were somewhat
'hardwired'... I used a generic Dynacalc on my Gimix, and had success using
VT-100, Wyse-50, and OS9 Coco's as terminals.

Mike,
Pete is right; the CoCo version of Dynacalc is hardwired for the CoCo display
and keyboard. I discovered this the hard way when I tried to invoke Dynacalc
from a script file and then pass commands to it. While this process is clearly
described in the generic Dynacalc OS9 manual, it doesn't work on the CoCo
version at all (which is a real shame).
On the other hand, I didn't have much success getting the generic version to
run on the CoCo, at least not using the keyboard and display. I didn't try it
with an external terminal. I suggest you might want to scrounge a generic
version and play with it; there must be some around (I've got one, but don't
really want to part with it).

Announcing! X10 Master Control Program for OSK and KWindows!
Features:
Dual user selectable interfaces. One is the "standard" K-Windows Menu Style
interface. It has a menu bar of functions functions and a "toolbar" of quick
action buttons. The other interface is in a "popup" style window which is "on
top of" the window it was created on and only contains buttons for quick
action. It is movable and resizable.
With the single click of your mouse you can now turn a light on or off. With an
additional mouse drag of a slide bar you can dim a light to any of 16 discrete
levels. With just a few more mouse clicks these actions can be performed on up
to 16 remote modules at the same time. With menu bar functions you can access
all modules available from you X10 Powerhouse Controller, a total of 256
different remote modules, with direct commands which are executed immediately
or with programmed events which occur at the date, day and time you specify.
Store pre-programmed commands to turn units on or off or dimmed on any date and
time or on repetative times, like at 4PM every Tuesday. You can even have the
X10 vary the time just slightly each repetition to give would be robbers the
illusion of non-computer control.
You can save your configuration of known modules and current X10 program memory
to a disk file for later recovery after a power failure and you were caught
without a good battery! Access all other functions on the X10 like, display
current base house code, display current date and time and even run an X10
diagnostic on the X10 controller via other menu bar functions, all using full
mouse for input. Remote Module Identification is one of the only times you need
to touch your keyboard while using the X10 Master Control Program from
ColorSystems!
X10 Master Control Program will be available for delivery at the upcoming
Chicago CoCoFest at a special introductory price. After the 'fest it will be
available for mail order for a slightly higher cost.
Features of the X10 Powerhouse Controller:
Access remote modules which are fully compatable with the line of "Plug 'n'
Power" modules available at Radio Shack.
Eight on/off rocker switches control units 1-8 for the currently selected base
housecode.
Access up to 256 modules with one controller. (Sixteen units for sixteen
housecodes, access must be either with computer interface or pre-programmed
event to act on any module outside the range of the keypad or in a housecode
different from the controller's current base housecode.)
Store up to 128 pre-programmed events.
Once programmed, may be detached from the computer, but while connected,
pre-programmed events and events initiated via the on board rocker switches are
reported back to the computer interface.
At Chicago I will have a limited supply of brand new X10 controllers and
assorted Plug 'n' Power modules and will be offering them at a special price
when purchased with the X10 Master Control Program.
If you would like to get pricing and ordering information just drop me a line

We have a tcp/ip network consisting of a Force CPU30 box running OS9
2.4, an OS2 box running 2.1 and an HP Integra system running SCOUs Xenix. In
addition, we periodically attempt to tie into a LANtastic network of seven
pcUs, one of which has ArtisoftUs tcp/ip package. When separate both the tcp/ip
and LANtastic nets appear to work ok. When connected, things may run smooth for
a week or so with ftp and telnet services working properly across the various
platforms. Eventually however, sparks will fly, packet collisions detected on
the LANtastic net go through the roof and our periodic, background ftp tasks
originating on the Force hang during execution even though you can successfully
ftp in the foreground from the OS9 shell.
We are prepared to sever the LANtastic connection in order to restore
network integrity which will, in most likelihood, eliminate our OS9 ftp
problems. Regardless, I would like a better understanding of the problem. Our
ftp tasks are periodically initiated from a C program with a system call
similar to the following:

or, more typically,

It is interesting that, by killing this ftp task, our data is transferred and
the system runs normally until this happens again.
IUd appreciate if someone could explain whatUs going on here. One last note,
the IP addresses all begin with 127 (eg, 127.1.1.1, 127.1.1.2 and 127.1.1.3).

Shouldn't lock - but that may be the cause of the excess collisions... And
don't go thinking that the Microware os9 TCP/IP is rock solid... It;s a minimal

Fm: Frank Hogg of FHL 70310,317

NEW PRODUCT ANNOUNCMENT
MONTOR MOUNTED RECHARAGEABLE MAGNETIC FLOPPY DISK HOLDER
4/1/94
THE
"DISK-MAG"
After 3 years in development the DISK-MAG will be available soon
to solve the common annoying problem of misplacing floppy disks
and risking possible damage. The DISK-MAG is placed on the side
on the computer monitor with velcro tape. The DISK-MAG is
capable of holding six 5 1/4" floppy disks or three 3.5" floppy
disks. Multiple DISK-MAGs may be used for those needing larger
capacity. The DISK-MAGs secret is the incredible holding power of
the rechargeable magnet made of a special material that gets
its recharge from the automatic degaussing coil that is in all
color monitors. This coil is activated at power down and
normally demagnetizes the monitors metal dot screen. The
DISK-MAGs special reverse magnet becomes magnetized by this coil
which is the reverse of what common magnets do. This reverse
magnetism is then filtered thru our patented circuitry and powers
the DISK-MAG. Normally a magnet would erase the contents of a
disk but the DISK-MAGs reverse rechargeable magnet actually
INCREASES the data integrity of the disk*. Therefore use of the
DISK-MAG will help insure against data loss while being a
convenient place to hold your disks.
We are researching ways of using this technology to insure
against data loss in tape and hard disk use. In addition we are
looking into using the technology to recover data inadvertently
lost thru normal deleting of files etc. Other possible uses are
restoring old audio tapes.
Price and availability will be announced soon.
*The DISK-MAG circuity only attracts the positive magnetic pulse
or binary '1' in the case of computer data. By attracting the positive
pulse it increases the power or size of the pulse thereby increasing
data integrity. The circuit is fairly simple for binary data which is
1's and 0's. Analog data requires a more sophisticated circuit and
more research before we can announce a product using this technology.

Sounds like a few things we used to send the new Navy boots on board ship.

I'm having trouble restoring downloads from this forum with the ARC utility.
Every time I try it, I get an error message that says the file has a bad
header.
I'm downloading files onto my Mac, then porting them via DOS floppy to my
Philips 605 running OS-9. Are the files possibly coming across as Mac Binary
during the download? I've looked but can find no switch to force the downloads
not to be treated as Mac Binary. Or maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree.
Any ideas? A reply via Compuserve mail would be most appreciated.

Your terminal program on the Mac should have a switch that allows you to engage
MacBinary or not. If you don't, trash that stupid program and get one of the
ones that does.... TermPlus, ZTerm, ClarisWorks, etc.
Once you've got it in straight binary form, well.... it's anyone's guess from
there.

Fm: Bob van der Poel 76510,2203
To: All
I have an intersting little problem with my Epson Action II Laser printer. I
added a memory upgrade to it awhile ago...things never work out just right. The
printer has 512K internal memory and the memory upgrade claims to be 2meg.
However, when the printer starts up the readout asserts that there is 3meg in
the beast, not 2.5 as it should be. Now, when we monkey with the switches on
the memory upgrade we can fool (?) the printer into think that it has 4.5 meg.
I haven't tried printing in this mode...but I believe it to be wrong. The
memory board is populated with 16 P21014-07 DRAMs. Anyone happen to know what
they are...I assume that they are 1meg x 4. Which means that the board would be
2meg??? On the other hand, maybe I really do have 4 meg on the board? But the
manaul which comes with it does not show how the switches can be configured to
deliver that combination, even though the printer thinks this is the truth? Any
ideas?

Gee, that's a tal order. OS-9 is an operating system much like Unix except it
is much smaller and modular. OS-9 is mostly used for industrial control
applications and is normally burned in a ROM along with the application
software. However, it makes a real good hobbyist OS which is the main reason
for this forum, to support OS-9 users.
The reason OS-9 is attractive to the industrial control people is because it is
modular, easily ROMed and also for it's real-time capabilities.
Hardware is another matter. OS-9 was originally written for the Motorola CPU
series (6809, 68000, 68020 etc). but is now available for the Intel CPUs as
OS-9000. There are a number of OS-9 machines around. If you are really
looking for one, let us know here and the name of a few vendors can be
provided.
Let me know if you have any more questions. You can just post yours to the
general forum members as there are more people out there that can answer you
questions better than I.

but....
Most/many OS9 users started with the early CoCo's and moved on to model
3, leaving #1&2 to gather dust or be given away, and/or acquired a pc too.
But there's a great program in the CoCo forum which will, for either case, be
able to provide at least a bit of nostalgia. I refer to a CoCo-2 emulator for
pc compatibles. A very nice bit of programming, seems to me. Minimum

Boisy,
I've been in contact with them off and on for a couple of years. The problem
is that they will not release specs for the HMI interface itself, and they will
not release sample source code, they will only release a compiled library of
functions for the mainstream DOS, Windows or Mac development platforms. Maybe
Microware can do something about getting OSK libraries? I didn't get anywhere
with it, and neither have others like Amiga and Atari developers, and they've
tried a lot harder than I ever did. I was looking at it strictly as a way to
make InfoXpress less prone to line noise, or changes in menus, but decided that
the effort to implement HMI was more than I really wanted to tackle (not to
mention CIS's disinterest in supporting a non standard platform). If it was
available, I'd look into using it, and I'd be happy to add my support, as a
developer, for an OSK library. Please keep me posted.

AHA!
I have long suspected that the popularity of all the fancy graphics and
multimedia interfaces was related to the fact that our schools no longer teach
people to read.
Perhaps the person at Compuserve in charge of releasing those specs is a recent
graduate.
Send him (or her) a picture.

I hope this is the right place, I was told to try OS-9.
I have been using the Deskmate Diary, & after 7 months, the program
seems to have crashed. It was, I suppose, opening new space on the HD, when
the screen froze & everything stopped. The only thing I could do was to turn
the computer off & on again. Now when I try to get into the file I get a
message saying there is an error reading the files.
Someone suggested I try ATTRIB, but no success. Is there any was I can
get back in, or have I lost 7 months of daily entries?
Thanks, David

Unless you're running a 6809, or 68000 based system using the OS9 or OS9/68000
operating system, someone threw you a curve ball. Since Deskmate is a Tandy
product (and some OS9'ers run Color Computers, which is a Tandy product - just
not a DOS based one), I'd recommend you check with other Tandy owners. Try GO
TANDY.

First off let me state that this "problem" is not a big deal. It is just one of

to boot from the hard drive without any problem. Now that I have the Maxtor it
must tries anywhere from 5 to 10 times to boot before it does. This is when it
is up and running and I just press reset. It is worst when it is a cold boot. I
have a blank formatted disk in the drive like I should. It seems to me that I
saw a message a while ago from someone who had this same make of drive that
found a fix to the problem. If so please let me know what you did.

I'm surprised it is even booting at all. I have two 7213S's and when I upgraded
to a 340 and it wouldn't boot I spent quite some time on the telephone with
Kevin Pease. His last comment on the matter was that the ROM boot code was
trying to do multi sector IO and the drive did not support it (or vice versa, I
don't remember which). Pease actually suggested getting a smallish Connor just
to boot from!! His only other suggestion was to send him my second drive so he
could debug the boot code on his system with the drive. I told him I would be
willing to do without a second hard drive for up to a month and offered to send
it to him, but at the time (shortly after last year's ATL fest) he was too busy
to work on it. I haven't spoken to him since, and I am still having to boot
from a floppy.

What version of the Ultra C compiler are you using? Microware sells a DOS (not
OS/2) hosted version of the Ultra C cross compiler. The 1.2 version of Ultra C
(due out soon) generates very efficient code vis a vis compared to GCC, Ultra C
1.1 and C 3.2 compilers.
You may want to check your options and upgrade to the 1.2 version of Ultra C
when it is available.

One problem that existed back in those days (v2.2) was that OS-9 only did 256
byte sectors. Some OS-9 ports required SCSI drives that supported 256 byte
sectors. I don't know if this is true of the MVME-147 port. It has been a
long
time since I have seen a SCSI drive that still supports 256 byte sectors. You
also might try a newer version SCCS type driver. The last SCCS drivers before
VCCS knew how to pack two 256 byte sectors into a 512 byte physical sector.

Paul,
Are you talking about the message on the internet which mentioned that at one
time, someone was going to develop a 6809 Level 3?
Or do you mean OS9/68K version 3.0? That's out and usable on 680x0 systems. It
adds a bunch of smaller features; the main one being preemptive file managers.

Yep, that's OS9/68K version 3. Has a lot of little realtime tuning options
plus more speed handling some function calls, along with new binary semaphores
and other stuff I can't recall at the moment. We've got it in at work but
haven't installed it yet (altho I think we will soon).

Dear friends:
Once again from the depths of the obscure equipment and unknown
hardware bin, I have managed to obtain an interesting piece of practical
peripherality. (Hold on it will probably get worse.) I picked up an AVAL
PKW 1000. Now what is an AVAL PKW 1000, you may ask? Go ahead, I'll wait
while you ask. Funny you should ask, it is a self-contained EPROM
programmer. It has a hex keyboard 0-F, and 8 commands keys:
LOD RST
ERS JOB
PRG -
CMP SET
on a control panel about the size of a calculator. It is labeled a Pecker 10
Intelligent Programmer. To the right of the control panel is a socket adapter,
about 3x5 inches labeled FX-1. It has a zero insertion force socket and will
take either 24 or 28 pin eproms. It lists that it can program 2716 up to
27C256 eproms. The socket adapter is removable and other types of eproms
could be used with the appropriate adapter. There is a Parallel I/O port
connector and an RS-232 jack on the back.
Overall, the unit is about one foot square and about 2-3 inches deep. It
plugs into a standard outlet. Unfortunately, it did not come with any
instructions. Has any one ever heard of the company? If so does any one
know of where I might get an instruction manual? This is a real nice
looking unit and the preliminary test that I have performed suggest that
it is in working order. Now as much as I have never been one to let
facts stand in the way of my making a decision, I would like to have at least
a vague idea of how to use this piece of equipment.
With all best wishes, Brother Jeremy, CSJW OS9 Users Group Treasurer

A client of mine (MOD) is trying use OS/9 on VME 680x0 to talk to a realtime
instrument we make. He says he cannot respond in less than 25ms!
Surely he is making some kind of obvious mistake - we really need him to get
back inside a deterministic 3ms max.
Any help/guidance/suggestions?
At the moment, neither of us is much impressed with OS/9.

Hi Simon,
What else is your client doing in his program? Writing to a slow disk drive,
responding to other instruments, or ?
How is your instrument connected (serial?) and what kind of data traffic are we
talking about?
Also, which 680x0 and at what speed?
What language is his program written in?
Sounds kind of flaky that he'd blame the OS in this case. Its overhead is near
nil for most things.

OS9 is much faster than that. I was looking though some of my literature to
find timing information...the only thing I could find was from some MW
literature:
Task Switch - 55.1 +/- 1.5 usec.
Interupt response - 11.1 usec.
This is based on a 20MHz 68020. Seems that your client is probably doing
something wrong...25ms is a long time!
If you were to let us know how the instrument is interfaced, etc. someone here
might be able to shed some light on the problem.

Thanks, Bob and Kevin.
I am not party to the what the client is actually doing the rest of the time,
in the rest of his application (hush-hush), so I am guessing. It's his first
time with OS9, and I haven't used it either.
I will take it that he is doing something silly, and try to sort it out with
him and his vendor support. However, to fill in a bit for your interest:
We make, among other things, a video annotation board (8052-based, PL/M
programmed) which puts precision crosswires and text annotation on a
video-recording; in this case, the client has a 68020 VME rig which handles
other instrumentation but which does not otherwise know about video. There is
a non-real-time setup protocol for positioning the display and crosswires etc,
plus a real-time mode where we provide a 'tick' character at 19200 baud every
video field sync. If they reply in 3ms with their 10-character data string then
we guarantee that the video recording annotation will be deterministic.
The data string contains text, numbers, flags and X-Y position for two
crosswires.
They claim to be unable to respond in 3ms - more like 25ms.
There you are. Thanks anyway. Best regards Simon A

Okay. My best guess:
It sounds like they're probably using their main process to answer you once
they hit a main loop area where it can notice your input... and that the main
process takes a max of 25ms to get around to this area.
What they might try doing is:
* Have a background process of high priority waiting for your tick. (It could
even just always have a one-byte read pending vs polling the serial port.)
* Share a data module (containing the latest desired text annotation) with
the main process and the background process.
* The background process can then respond to your tick fairly immediately.
This assumes, of course, that they don't have any far more critical (higher
priority) processes or long interrupt routines. No OS can handle the case
where there are more high-priority processes than there is cpu power to handle
them :-)

Even easier than a shared data mod would be for the main routine to have a pipe
to the background process. When the background process learns that the
annotator is ready it just needs to read from a path. Hmmm, would this be as
fast as writing to memory? Probably not much difference?

I am, of course, not familiar with the details of what you are doing, so please
consider my comments in this context.
At 19200 baud, assuming 1 start bit and 1 stop bit (i.e., 10-bit characters),
each character will take about 0.52ms to transfer.
Once your system transmits the 'tick' character, it will take 0.52ms before the
other system has received it. This leaves 2.48ms for that system to respond.
Assuming zero processing time, it will take 5.2ms for the other system to
transmit the 10-character data string to your system -- an absolute minimum
total of 5.72ms after you have transmitted the 'tick' character. So you may
want to review that 3ms specification.
Of course, this does not account for the other 19ms they claim they require. As
Kevin and Bob have said, several factors can influence this number.
Best of luck... / Ken

When others say that CoCo/OS9 Dynacalc was "hardwired", I believe what they're
saying is that since CoCo/OS9 never incorporated TERMCAP files to define a
terminals capabilities, those terminal capabilities had to be in a file that I
believe is unique to the CoCo/OS9 system which I believe is called DYNATERM and
must reside in the working directory that DynaCalc has access to when it starts
up. (Whatever it's called, I've renamed mine and patched Dynacalc so the TRM
file can be found in the CMDS directory.)
Anyway, the DynaTerm file is where the TERMinal information is "hard-wired".
I've even patch my TERM file so that my Dynacalc screen displays the column
headers and the row identifies in reverse video. I did it by patching the TERM
file so that when DynaCalc was writing the column and row markers, it simply
picked up the reverse video codes instead of the normal video codes.
There are a bunch of other control codes in that file that deal with screen
formatting, it's conceivable that you could probably patch it up with another
terminal's codes and get it to work.
The major obstacle is that the contents of the DynaTerm file is not documented.
However, I believe there's a file here in the Data Areas that has some of
that files contents documented. Scan for Dynacalc specific keywords.

>19200baud timing calcs....
Thanks for your interest, Ken. In fact, we specify the 3ms timing requirement
from the receipt of the character by the host hardware. This takes out the
initial latency assuming a cable link (no modem/satellite delays.) Furthermore,
the timing period is to the first character in the string; the data is required
to follow in a continuous burst.
I hope that reassures you.
TO ALL:
The problem (it transpires) lies with the BIOS (" R**stone CIOS"?) in the 68020
I/O coprocessor, NOT the main 68040 running OS/9. Apparently when the host
arranges an interrupt from the co-pro when a serial char arrives, it is
subject to the 25ms co-processor BIOS polling loop. There isn't even a way to
wire in a wire hardware interrupt from a port pin: so that's it.
It always amazes me how large systems insulate their programmers (compared with
our little PCB80528 uP, an 8052 with an extra 256 bytes of ram on board!) A
resident operating system is only a help when the designers have anticipated
EVERYTHING that you might use it for. Perhaps that is why Windows is popular --
by allowing you to break the rules it allows the legion of hackers to make it
usable.
(what a hideous thought!) All the best .. Simon A

Hi Folks,
I am in need of PROPER dmode parameters for the following drive types and
formats for my MM/1:
Formats: Universal, PC, Standard OS-9, Atari ST
Drive types: 3.5" 1.44MB
3.5" 720K
5.25" 360K
5.25" 1.2MB
That would be a total of 16 sets of dmode parameters. I've swapped drives so
many times that I'm not sure which is which, so any help would be MOST
appreciated. -- Boisy G. Pitre__ __ __ Delphi: BOISY

Boisy, here are some of my dmode scripts that I use to toggle between different
formats. I have each of these short files in a subdirectory in CMDS (accessed
by the PATH variable) with the 'e' bit set. To set things up I just type
d0.coco, or whatever. Note, you can have the comment lines in the file...makes
it easier to remember, but all the stuff after 'dmode' has to be one long line.

I got a NEC (Model CDR-25BJ) single speed external CD-ROM, SCSI interface, for
$59.00 (Drives with greater speeds cost more.) from M.B.E. Computers at a flea
market type computer show here around the Chicago area. This company is in
Michigan and their phone number is 517-646-9895, fax 517-646-9885. Supposedly
he has around 100 of them, however, I don't know if he does mail order.
Also Chris Hawks of Hawksoft makes cables for the drive and has developed some
software to be able to read a disk. I haven't gotten it yet, and I don't know
all that it can do, but I have heard that it will play a music disk. Chris is
Hawksoft on Delphi and can be reached on the Internet hawksoft@delphi.com.
Snail mail address: 255 S. Randall Road, Suite #172, Elgin, IL 60123. The
version he is selling now works on K-Windows and he is working on a version for
G-Windows.

For your enlightened entertainment,
When I spotted this I had to read it 3 times before I beleaved it.
I read the following in the September 12th 1994 issue of Infoworld on
page 10. The title of the piece is: "It's official: Chicago will be
called Windows95" The article describes why Microsoft decided on the
name Windows95 rather than Windows 4.0 because...
"According to Microsoft, users had difficulty understanding which
version of Windows, 3.0, 3.1, or 3.11 was the latest."
Explains a lot doesn't it.
However we must ask the question. Which came first?
Do stupid people buy Windows or does using Windows make people stupid?
I'll let you decide.

Gosh, Frank, I use Windows for seven or eight hours a day at work, and Mensa
doesn't think I'm stupid yet! Mind you, maybe using OS9 at home is an antidote
of sorts. Actually, I like Windows' point-and-shoot launcher, but it is
miserable at actually running things, and its multitasking is a poor joke. And
talk about slow!
But which one is the latest? Gee, does it matter? They ALL crash with amazing
regularity.
Oh, it was MY decision to buy Windows at work, for the simple reason that all
the sophisticated software works only with Windows, and we have some 45
MSDOS/Windows computers in our office; kinda hard to be odd man out!

What an inane comment, Mark. The posting was aimed at those people who are
online on CompuServe and will be attending the CoCofest in Atlanta. I had a
vendor booth, which one of the services I was offering was some image
processing. So what if I was forced to perform this service with a non-CoCo or
even a non-OS9 system.
And, no, I do not think it was inappropriate for the show at all, which is not
an OS9 show, it was a CoCofest.
And just what do you care anyway.

Sorry to say this folks, but this forum reminds me of an old age home for the
computationally challenged. The last message that scrolled did so in 1991?!?
Seriously, as I sit here at my 486 WinNT speed burner, I prepare for my next
"opportunity to excel" at work. Seems I've inherited a project that has to use
an OS-9 Lvl 1/BASIC-09 based communications handler module in a Programmable
Logic Controller. A real museum piece by anybody's standards. I didn't find
it exactly encouraging that there were NO messages in the 0S-9/6809 since the
last message scrolled.
Some questions:
Any suggestions where to lay hands on original reference documentation for this
stuff? The module vendor provides some that they claim to have parroted from
Microware Many Moons Ago, but I keep feeling like they left about half of it
out to avoid printing costs.
I'm particularly interested in a) O/S interface to executables in case I end up
programming in ASM-09, b) BASIC-09 variable storage formats (i.e., what does
ADDR(var) point to?), c) most anything else relevant to OS-9 Lvl 1 and
BASIC-09.
Thanks for any help. You might also reply by CIS or Internet email--this forum
looks pretty sleepy and I don't image that I'll stop by frequently to see no

You might want to contact Microware. I believe that they sell manuals, without
software. If they don't have the 6809 Basic manual, you might want to get the
68000 basic manual since the 2 basics are functionally identical (with the
execption of about 2 functions). Either that, or find someone dumping a Color
Computer 3 with Level II OS9 since, again, the Basic is the same.

Knew that. Question was what is storage format, particularly for strings and
arrays and defined types and so forth? IF I have x=ADDR(somestring$) what is
really located there, byte for byte at x, x+1, x+2, x+n?
See, I did stop back by. Thanks for the information!

Assume that somestring$ == "bob", then x='b', x+1='o', etc. Basic09 strings are
terminated with a $ff.

Zack,
Yes, but it doesn't return the defined length of the variable, just the current
length. And it only works on strings, but then depending on how this is being
used, it should be fairly obvious what the size of non string variables is.

Perhaps you could use the SIZE(str) function. This returns the DIM'ed size of
the string you are querying.

Bob,
You are correct, but the only examples I've ever seen are in the C manual! Some
good examples, though, of how to use C subroutines with Basci09. And since the
Basci09 calling convention is a little odd, interfacing with C requires some
#asm directives to set things up correctly, providing some clues on how to
interface with asm directly.

Hi all,
I just purchased a TEAC FD-55GFR 1.2MB 5.25" floppy drive for my
MM/1. I cannot seem to read CoCo OS-9 formatted disks with the
following dmode parameters:
name=c1
drv=1 stp=3 typ=$24 dns=$01 cyl=40 sid=2 vfy=1 (off) sct=18 t0s=18
sas=8 ilv=3 tfm=0 toffs=0 soffs=1 ssize=256 cntl=$0000 trys=0 lun=0
wpc=0 rwr=0 park=0 lsnoffs=0 totcyls=80 ctrlrid=0 rates=$10
scsiopt=$0000 maxcount=65535
When I attempt to read, I get an error #247. The light comes on and
the drive is apparently trying to read the disk.
I recall hearing discussion that some 5.25" drives use a different
spin rate to read hi-density while others use a different data rate.
While I'm not trying to read a hi-density disk in this case, I wonder
if this drive will work as a 1.2 meg floppy?
Does anyone have any experience with this drive on the MM/1? I would
appreciate any answers. If I can't use the drive, I'm taking it back.

Just to recap this whole thread, and why I think we're getting confused, was
thay Dick wanted to know what ADDR() returned. Then we got talking about string
lengths, etc.
ADDR(string) - returns the address of string. This can be used, with
great caution, but using POKE and PEEK.
LEN(string) - returns the length of string
SIZE(string) - returns the storage allocated for string.
You needed worry about overwriting the string storage since B09 will not permit
it (unless you do POKE/PEEK).
BTW, B09 is a pretty good and very fast language. It has some limitations which
I was hoping would be addressed in the 68K version, but, alas, it seems not to
be so. I would like to see some was to implement Global and/or Static variables
and a way to limit the name space pollution with all packed functions be
available to the entire system...should be some way to make private functions.

Well, maybe this will work. If you have a Basic main prog, say Prog1, as
follows:
Dim s1:string[50]
RUN Prog2(s1)
Then you have prog2 :
DIM s2:string[100]
Print "The size of the string: ";size(s2)
Then the correct size WILL be passed PROVIDED the stringsize in the subfunction
is >= the stringsize in the calling function.. Note if it is smaller, SIZE(s2)
will return a Parameter Error.
Hopefully this might help you.. However, you might need to ensure that the s2
IS >= s1. Otherwise, everything will be OK if LEN() of the passed string is <
SIZE(s2), but if the passed strlen exceeds the capacity of the PARAM string,
then PARAM ERROR is returned.

Ahh yes. Gimme some GLOBAL variables.. This was one of my biggest gripes
about B09. If you're trying to write a very large and involved program, and
the bad part about M-W basic is that it is VERY capable of doing so.., and you
have forty-'leven sub-modules, and suddenly you realize you need to add one
more little field to that "TYPE" that occurs in almost every single module; it
seems like you can NEVER find them all . I think this is about the only -
well one of the very few - aspects that make it inferior to C from a
programming standpoint.

Hi Ken! Long time no talk.
By OUT, I presume you mean un-jumpered. Well, both LG and I are
unjumpered on this drive.
I couldn't even format a 1.2MB floppy until I removed the jumper from DC
and stuck it on RY. Then, I could format and read a 1.2MB floppy. But,
I still could not read a 360K formatted disk (CoCo), hence the Error

Multiple methods of bidirectional comms are available:
1) Shared memory (memory data module)
2) Two way pipe (or named pipe, under OSK)

Okay - pipes and (memory) data modules are still viable. Pipes are only
possible is the processes share a relationship (i.e. parent/child). The biggest
difference between OSK and OS9 here is that you'll have to pre-create the data
module at a fixed size and then load it, as opposed to dynamically creating it
on the fly.

The pipe approach sounds best (a loaded data module might also work) but I'm
trying to avoid doing any .ASM. Only tool that comes with the processor in
question is BASIC-09; ASM is extra cost. Plus, ASM means I've really go to go
find the OS-9 operating system docs.
Can I get there (data modules or pipes) from BASIC-09? I can set it up so that
the processes are parent/child (via a shell prob&) from the parent process.

between using the SYSTEM() calls and a subroutine called 'syscall' you should
be able to do most of what you need.
You may find data modules a bit easier.

Well, I didn't exactly want to know what ADDR() returned. This I pretty much
knew. What I wanted to know is what did the structure stored at that location
look like. (Didn't TRS-80 BASIC store a DIM out there too? That's what I was
wondering...) What I've learned is that if I want some other module to be able
to look at a string safely, I have to somehow get it both ADDR(mystring$) and
SIZE(mystring$) so that I know where to poke about and where not to.
Whole reason to know this was that I'd like to be able to implement an
inter-process communications scheme for passing vlidated messages recieved in
realtime to a lower priority process that breaks them back and can queue them.
I still don't know a good way to do this. The LOADed data module seems like
one way, but the complications to doing this without ASM are not clear. Using
pipes may also be a way, but what would this look like from a B09 code/shell
procedure point of view?
Thanks for continued thought stream! My system hardware should be here in a

Hi - I know I'm in the wrong forum, although I figured that specialized

forum dealing with QNX software?
Thanks,

Hi,
There are two forums which discuss CD-i and VOD on CIS (acronym overload :)
One is the Video Games Forum, Section 6. This section is devoted to
CD-i from a user's point of view.
The other is the Multimedia Forum, Section 17, where CD-i is discussed
in a technical fashion. I read both since my interests lie in the
technical and user ends.
Good luck.

Hallo all,
we are a multimedia developer working with Philips CD-I.
We are using a CD-I 605 player with CD-RTOS and want to install a HP 35480A
SCSI DAT Drive for backup. The problem is that the descriptors for exabyte and
viperdrives do not work.
So my question is, wether anybody has written such a descriptor or knows a
source who can provide one.
I hope somebody can help me with that,
Christoph.

Hi David,
Yes, OS-9 is used in CD-i players. At first, only Microware (the makers of
OS-9) made dev systems for it, but now there are several good ones from other
vendors. Your best bet is to "go cdi" or "go multimedia" (same place) and ask
about them in the CD-i section.

I hate to admit this, but here goes - I used to be a CoCo OS9er back a few
years ago, but now I'm an IBM'er. Sorry, but that's where my job went.
Anyway, I always liked OS9 on the 6809 and am considering a side project that
might be right in line for it.
I have two questions:
1 - Does anyone know of a small 6809 based embedded controller that would be
OS9 compatible? Price is also a consideration here.
2 - Is there a C/Assembler cross compiler to do development to the above device
that would be hosted on an IBM pc clone?
Any help would be most appreciated.
Thanks,
Doug Farrell

Is there an American distributor for your utility that read/writes OS/9 on an
MS-DOS machine? I like you demo, and wish to purchase it, but I would like to
see all of my options. If I purchase direct from you, what is the approximate
dollar equivalent for your DM price?

Doug,
There is a 6809 emulator that runs on a PC that should help your development.
You could run that and use your old CoCo software. Versions for Level I and II
OS-9 are out there I believe and freely available on the Internet.
Some others here might have more information to offer about this. I'm "out of
the OS-9 loop" now and have never run these emulators.
Good Luck,

The file OS9MAX (ARJ) in this forum has an effulgent description of its
wondrous capabilities when in fact it is a DEMO. I discovered it via the
filefinder program on the CompuServe CD-ROM for September, and went straight
for it, as I have a number of old os9 SS DD disks that I would like to be able
to port over to the PC.
But, not only is this program a Demo, it excludes this very format, though I
can (huh!) send a sample disk to Germany for "evaluation" . . . . ?
Please advise others that this is not a fully working program, but a subtle ad
for a commercial program - even though the Demo may work well if you have the
formats it covers. I spent about 20 minutes downloading this at 2400 baud and
will be asking CIS for a credit.
Nothing personal intended,
Sincerely, Alan Bain.

Dear friends: Once again it is almost Christmastide. I want to take the
opportunity to thank all of you who have given so many gifts to me and the rest
of the OS-9 community this past year. Your willingness to share programming
and technical knowledge...your words of support and encouragment to
newcomers...your kind notes to me at various times, both to assist when I have
a computer related need, or just to say hello. My chosen life, that as a monk,
allows me few luxuries. Having taken a vow of poverty, I do not have a great
deal of personal possessions, and as far as the world is concerned, I am a poor
man. But, when I count all of you, my friends, I am quite wealthy indeed.
At Midnight mass, on Christmas eve, it is customary for a priest to remember
family and friends during the prayers. I want to assure that you will all be
in my prayers that night. As has become my own custom, if there are any that
you would like me to remember in my prayers that night, any special intentions
for yourselves, your friends, and family, please send me an email message with
your intentions and I will be pleased to remember them in prayer.
I know that I have said this many times, but the OS-9 community is a very
special part of my life. I look foreward to the Fests, and other times when we
can get together. I wish all of you a blessed holiday time, and a peacefull
and prosperous New Year.

Merry Christmas to all!
Hard to believe that we are any of us here in this forum...but, then I read
some more about programming under MSDOS/WINDOWS and I decide to stick to OS9
for another year. Besides, everything I need to do (plus much more) can be done
on my assortment of hardware/software...so why switch. And it is fun!
So, hang in for another year guys!

Good thoughts, Bob. There is a lot going for OS9. I know, there are times
when I look at all the "goodies" available for MSDOS and think maybe how nice,
but then I look back and see that I still have all I need, and get that rush of
excitement again.
And, when I look at all the great people we have in the system, I see another
plus. When I was contemplating upgrading from my CoCo, I took a look at the
"standard" systems (MS-Dos and Mac), but then I got to thinking about what a
great group of people I would be missing. I notice that when anyone asks a
question, all the respondents come in with a "we" attitude, and very rarely do
you see anyone talking down to anyone, with an air of superiority, and that is
really a big mark in "our" favor.
Merry Christmas to all.
