In general 'C' is an accepted language in embedded system, real time systems and the like. As far as application programs, most likely 'C' or even Pascal. I believe the ORIGINAL (CP/M) version of WordStar was written in assembly language on the Z80/8080 microprocessors, but it was much easier to program in assy lang in those days when one could brag about having a system with 64k and TWO eight inch disk drives. The WordStar for CP/M was about 38k long. Today, big projects like WordPerfect or Paradox and other IBM application software take a tremendous time, number of people, and money. QBasic is a BASIC language compiler made by Microsoft, the original maker of MBASIC for IBM and MS-DOS systems. While I could not swear to it, I would think WordPerfect would probably be written under something like 'C' or Pascal. Even though WordPerfect theoretically could be written under QBasic since QBasic does make an executable (.EXE). There is 1 Reply. #: 17284 S1/General Interest 24-Dec-92 05:20:07 Sb: #17274-language? I hope it is something like that. While I have your attension, do you know anything about writing screen print drivers. I have a Deskjet 550c sitting here just aching for a driver. It prints text files just great, but I would sure like to print some of these pictures on the MM/1. I sent off to HP for the technical reference manual, because the manuals that came with it told nothing about how to send the data that the printer needs to do color printing. It came with a couple of disks of drivers, but these are for ms-dos, which does me no good at all. I have no idea on how to write a driver, but I'm going to look into it. larry There is 1 Reply. #: 17322 S1/General Interest 03-Jan-93 20:35:51 Sb: #17320-#Happy New Year Fm: Bob van der Poel 76510,2203 To: LARRY OLSON 72227,3467 (X) Larry, guess it's up to us to keep the traffic here up . Grafix drivers for printers are pretty application specific. I have written a few screen dump routines for dumping coco screens to an Epson printer. However, I believe that the Deskjet works much like a laser in this regard and you have to send it one line of data at a time. I spent some time reading a tech manual for a laser printer and it appeared that one just had to send the raster data along with some control codes. It didn't look all the complex, but then I didn't have access to the printer so didn't have to find out how "easy" it really is. I think that what you want to write is not a driver but a screen print program...quite different. The drivers supplied with your printer are most likely interfaces for specific ms-dos application programs. How do you like the deskjet? I considered buying one awhile ago, but was disappointed by the resolution. Of course, in the stores demoing them they just used cheap photocopy paper and appologized for the poor quality and assured me that with proper paper the resolution was excellent. But I wanted to see for myself and I guess they weren't all that interested in making a sale... The printer works great on text copy right out of the box. I will through together a little setup program that will allow setting different text styles and sizes. That shouldn't be a problem. I bought a copy of Vprint, but I havn't checked yet about setting Vprint enviroment up for using some of the printer features. I guess the stumbling block I see for a screen print routine is trying to figure out the correct code to send to the printer, when you get a pixel color and want to have the printer put the same color on paper. The computer uses RGB values while the printer uses CMY or CMYK. Its going to take some digging on this, right now I don't have a clue. As far as the print quality, from what I have seen, for text the quality is as good as a laser printer. The paper used does make a big difference, the regular photo copy paper is perfectly usable, but if you want the very sharpest characters, you might need to buy the paper that HP sellls. I picked up some erasable typing paper and tried it and it comes out beautiful when I ran the test routine that printed out all the different character styles and sizes. The only problem with this paper is that it is too thin, you can see through it. The problem with regular paper is that the ink has a tendency to spread as it soaks into the paper, but if you use some kind of coated paper, the ink won't soak in and spread. I don't know how long ago you looked at the Deskjet, but this new one, 550c, has a separate black ink cartridge as well as the color cartridge, which gives you black printing instead of the dark green they got when they were just mixing the colors to get black in the earlier models. I need to finish up this other program I have been working on, before I tackle any kind of screen print program, so when I do get heavy into it you can expect to see alot of dumb questions I'll be sure to be asking. larry There are 2 Replies. #: 17334 S1/General Interest 06-Jan-93 21:55:58 Sb: #17328-#Happy New Year Fm: Bob van der Poel 76510,2203 To: LARRY OLSON 72227,3467 (X) Larry: Do send me a copy of your vprint init file when you have it done! They give you some sample Glossy paper, Cutsheet paper and Transparency film., 5 sheets of each. I havn't tried them yet, but the cut sheet paper is about the weight of photocopy paper, the glossy paper is almost like photographic paper, and must be expensive. The cost was around $650, I'm not sure what the going price is, this was part of some other stuff that was bought, plus they had them on sale at the time, plus I had some percentage off coupons. I will send you any VPRINT init file I come up with, I just got the manual out and noticed that I never sent the registration paper in. I'm really bad about that. The problem with the palette colors, I don't even want to think about yet.. I started going through some of the Deskjet init files that came with VPrint, and found myself very quickly lost. This printer has so many options, which ones do you put in the init file. I still have to spend some more time with the technical manual to figure out what these commands do and how they innteract with each other. larry There is 1 Reply. #: 17350 S1/General Interest 09-Jan-93 10:46:23 Sb: #17349-#Happy New Year Fm: Lee Veal 74726,1752 To: LARRY OLSON 72227,3467 (X) There's probably more options available on the 500C, but the 500 has quite a powerful command set. I like it. I bought the FX-80 Emulation cartridge that's mentioned in the back of the User's Manual. By using the emulation cartridge I haven't had to find or develop new drivers. I've used MVCanvas to dump existing .VEF pictures using its Epson print driver. One drawback from using the emulation cartridge is that there's not "pass-thru" capability. Once it's in emulation mode that's where it stays. You can't access the native features by using some sort of special pass-thru sequence that will cause the emulation cartridge to be by-passed. Ergo, there's no way, that I've found anyway, to do the landscape printing that is supported in the native (non-emulated) mode. As for quality and quietness, the DeskJet 500 is great. It's hard to tell the difference between it an laser quality. It's pretty speedy, too. I got mine at BizMart for $349 + tax. The Emulation cartridge was an extra $79. I had to mail-order it, but it came very quickly. Lee #: 17345 S1/General Interest 08-Jan-93 21:24:09 Sb: MM/1 System for sale Fm: Colin J. Please tell me what to do to get started with this forum, like, which utilities are necessary, and what should I get first. For example, I'm new to OS9 but familiar with UNIX, so I want some of the UNIX-like utilities to make me productive more quickly. But they're "archived" (compressed, I'm sure) -- what do I need to unarchive them? My OS9 machine comes from Allen/Bradley (68030-based), so it may not (probably won't) run anything already compiled (will it?). I have a development set, so I'm not afraid of source. Is the 68030-stuff standard enough that I can run it on my machine (binary compatibility? something UNIX can't seem to do, tho I can see why that's hard to do.....) This is _very_ different from the UNIX version you may be familiar with. Source can be found in the Utilities library. Hope into any library and issue the following command: BROwse AR*.* /lib:all THat should net you a couple of hits. And actually, there's a good chance that executables _will_ work on your machine. If I got my numbers right the 030 will run code compiled on a 'lesser' machine. Give it a try. I work at SEPA, an Italian electronic company, in the Image Processing department. We are currently involved in a large european robotic project, where I'm the responsible for the Vision part. The system we have used to develop our algorithms is composed of some Image Processing boards (Digicolor, Roi-Store, Vfir-MkII from DATACUBE), one INMOS B014 board with 6 T800 transputer module plugged onto it and a SUN3E as CPU and VME bus master running UNIX as Operating System. Everything worked perfectly. Unfortunately, we have been convinced to change this architecture in order to cope with the real-time problems of a real application. As UNIX is not a real-time operating system, we have decided to use OS9 and conseguently we have replaced the SUN3E board with the MOTOROLA MVME147-SA-1. The big problem now, is that we don't have the software drivers both for the DATACUBE boards and for the INMOS one, as the two companies don't support this operating system. Actually Datacube supported it once, but not anymore, so that they provided us a partial set of source codes, leaving the work to test and debug them, to us. However Inmos was not able to give us anything and we are really in big troubles as we don't know where to start to solve the situation. I apologize to have bothered you with my sad story, but now you represent my last hope. I just did a little test. I created the following file: .u+=27,1 .u-=27,0 This is a \u+undeline\u- test. And printed it out to file. Using dump shows that the word 'underline' is prefaced by a $1b,1 and postfixed by a $1b,0. If it had gone to the printer it would have been underlined. For a single letter, you just surround the letter with a \U+ and \U-. Of course, it's easier to put the prin the environment file. This magazine will be my attempt to bring together the CoCo OS-9 and OSK communities under one publication and try to give all the readers the articles, columns, and departments they have been asking for over so many years. This magazine will serve the CoCo, OS-9 and OSK communities equally. Advertisers for products geared for each of these areas will be contacted. Column writers you are familiar with will be there. Articles that you would like to see will be written. In short, I hope to make this magazine what none of the others have done, and to pick up where The Rainbow left off. The magazine is unnamed at this point, which is where you, the potential readers come in. The first issue will announce the "Name that Mag" contest. The contest rules are this: You send in your entry for the magazine name via e-mail or US mail, including your name and address with your entry. All entries must be received before the 15th of May. In the next (June) issue of the unnamed magazine, the top 5 selections will be announced. Voting for the winner will then commence in the same manner as the entries were made, e-mail or snail mail. The winner by the popular vote will be announced in the July issue. The winner will also receive a set of Labtec Stereo Computer speaker and a free one year subscription. The runner-up will also receive a free one year subscription as well as some other goodies to be announced later. Starting with the May issue, the new magazine will be offered free to anyone who wants a copy, and will continue on with three more free issues. After that time, I and my wife (who will be the managing editor) will decide if enough user responses were made to warrant continuing with the effort. At the same time, the readers can decide if what they had seen so far was worth their time and money. If we both want to continue, then, at that point, subscriptions will be gathered and a new magazine, mandated by the community members, will be born. The first issue will be very small and subsequent issues will grow as support grows. I believe when the first four issues are done, we all will have a better idea of what direction this publication will take. I sincerely hope that the reader response is large enough to show support for continuing. I think we can make this magazine something that the readers would be proud of. This was something that I was also interested in, but as I remember, no one came up with a really elegant way of doing it. Of course, I suppose that by now, you probably have resolved the problem in some way, I think that I have stumbled across a pretty acceptable solution. Last night, in reviewing "OS9 Insights", in the section on pipes, the answer was there. I'm using OSTerm and don't have an ASCII upload ability, so I'll just briefly go over the algorithm. I'm using a CoCo, not yet having graduated to OSK, but most things should be similar.. Here goes.. int savout, pippth, pthsz; pippth=open("/pipe",READ+WRITE); savout=dup(1); close(1); dup(pippth); os9fork("pwd"....); from "INsights", OSK calls it a little differently from OS9 pthsz = readln(pippth, wdir, sizeof(wdir)) (Wdir is defined as char wdir[?] wdir[pthsz-1] = '\0'; to get rid of cr sent by pwd .....cleanup.... Yes, calling pwd and shoving the output down a pipeline will work well. Since I posed the question, I've rewritten my file selector in ved/68000 so that it no longed does any chd()s...that means that ved now has to keep track of relative pathlists. Still not the idea solution, but it works well. Using pipes to grab the output of standard os9 utilities is a very powerful and useful technique. I tend to avoid it in commercial products: one can never be sure that the utilities you _think_ are standard actaully generate the output you expect; nor do all systems end up with the same set of "standard" utilities (mind you, assuming pwd in Level II and pd in OSk would probably be safe...). The aim of this journal is, therefore, to confirm those peoples' decision who already work with OS-9 and to convince all others who do not yet. In order to reach this - admittedly ambitious - goal, OS-9 International will * maintain a list of OS-9 sites that have public domain software available * reserve pages for OS-9 user groups (OS-9 International is actually the official organ of the EFFO - The European Forum For OS-9) * present professional articles on software solutions for common problems * conduct software and hardware tests * print letters and short communications in order to establish a platform between OS-9 users and programmers * publish features of commercially available OS-9 software (maximally one product per issue) * contain advertisement for OS-9 related products. I think it was a lot better for us "on this side of the pond" since it was mostly in English. (I also got a copy of the first issue last year, and it was mostly German.) I am very interested in subscribing this this magazine, but am a little dubious. I called my bank and got the current exchange rate for US dollars to Swiss Francs, and it is 1.4308 US dollars to 1 Swiss Franc. That makes your subscription for six issues a whopping $58 US!! That is VERY expensive for just six issues of what basically is a users group newsletter. It IS 1.4308, and as the lady explained it to me, to covert Swiss Francs to US Dollars, one divides the Swiss Francs by the 1.4308 to get US dollars. So the quote of $58 US is correct. Sorry that this was not clear. OS-9 International is certainly *not* intended to be a users group newsletter. It is intended to be a journal devoted to the operating system OS-9; among other things it is the official organ of EFFO. The price for the journal is only symbolic. It does not at all cover the production costs nor was anyone ever paid for his work. If people cannot afford this price, then we simply got an answer to our question whether such a journal is feasible or not. carsten@ce.pr.net.ch #: 18154 S1/General Interest 22-May-93 21:30:20 Sb: #18105-get pwd in "C" Fm: David Breeding 72330,2051 To: Mike Haaland 72300,1433 (X) > There's a pwd() function up in lib 12. Fine so far... but sometimes, possibly due to hardware 'irregularities (bugs but not wanting to hurt feelings)' the blessed things fail to respond quickly (we have a third party card that sometimes refuses to let go of it's VSB access to a RAM card for example, this eventually causes the processor to fail when it tries to read the VME end) and an access error trap occurs. I am not having a lot fun with this and the following is what I think I know! I originally posted this as an answer to my own question on the OSK section, however I got no replies to the original so I thought I would put it in here as well! Cheers chapps! After this is all inclusion of other reply> When an access error occurs on the '040 it creates a type 7 stack frame on the supervisor stack, this contains the PC at the error, the CCR, the effective address, the 'broken pipe' information (pending accesses in the pipeline at the error) and some other stuff. The processor then disables tracing and vectors to the access error according to the vector in the vector table which is located according to the VBR (since you need to be in supervisor state to see this I can't tell exactly where it goes yet). OS-9 then finds some space puts it's address in a5 and stacks the registers. It then does some other stuff including overwriting the stack frame with the register set (already stored at a5 remember) and some other stuff. In the process it overwrites the really interesting bit ( the effective address, at tleast I presume that is the access address that went wrong ). It then drops you back into user mode and jumps to your service routine leaving only the register set to work from and without supervisor mode access. I find this a little irritating (given that I'm correct). I'd like to think I am wrong, however I cant reconcile the contents of the supervisor stack with the '040 manual. There is too much data there for it to be any other trap stack frame and all the registers have changed, the manual says nothing about copying them to (a5)+ so I am left to presume that OS-9 has deliberately hamstrung my ability to find out which bit of hardware has temporarily bitten the dust. AAAAAGH... Obviously I could be more pleased, especially since this is a specific port to the '040. Radstone say that they ship it in and ship it out. Microware say not us mate we supply it to Radstone and it's their lookout from then on. Am I wrong or what?? Got any suggestions? Thanks people. The TRS-80 Models 1, 3 and 4 were one line of somewhat code-compatible computers. The TRS-80 Models 2, 12, 16 and 6000 was another architecture line. The 16 and 6000 had dual CPUs (a Z-80 and a Motorola 68000), therefore they had two operating systems that could be run (TRS-DOS and Xenix). I believe early Color Computers from Radio Shack were even called TRS-80's, too, even though they didn't have a Z-80 microprocessor in them. I have contacts that might be able to get the 1/3/4 TRSDOS or the 2/12/16/6000 TRSDOS. If you could be a bit more specific, it would help. This also tells you you have an older version of the VGAKBD driver. I added the ANSI sequences a couple of years back. But I don't know when Fred started to distribute the new code with the boards he sells. BTW, the new driver still supports the old sequences. It has some interesting comments on OS9 for the Amiga. Steve ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Hi All, I received the following summary from Digby Tarvin, the person who ported OS9 to the Amiga. ---- Summary follows -- Firstly, let me quickly review the products available from Microware. The initial 6809 product, which was available as level I or II (the latter supporting an expanded memory model) has been discontinued. Its successor, OS-9/68000, is available as either "Industrial" or "Professional". Industrial OS-9 is Kernel and serial I/O only, and is intended for imbedded systems. Professional is intended as a multi user development system including everything in industrial, plus file system and tape support, a full range of utilities and the Microware C compiler. An earlier "Personal" OS-9 package intended for hobyists has unfortunately been discontinued. A variation on the above packages is required for use with 68020 or better processors. This version is called OS-9/68020 and comes with a different kernel and enhanced C compiler to allow access to the more powerful instruction set. The correct kernel must be used for the host CPU, but there is no difference for application software. The OS-9/68020 versions cost about 50\% more than their 68000 counterparts. Finally, Microware have released a kernel which has been re-coded in C, called OS-9000. The main effect this has is to allow non Motorolla systems to be supported. It does, however, require a more powerfull CPU. For example a minimum 68020 for Motorolla or 386 for Intel platforms. The Microware product that we have licenced is Professional OS-9\/68000 Version 2\.4. We are attempting to keep the price at US\$600.00 in line with Microwares price for the equivalent Atari product. Unfortunately, even though this is quite a bit below the the recommended retail price, it is expensive for hobyist use. An OS-9/68020 version of our port has been tested on an A3000, but we are waiting for some definite interest before comitting the money for a licence. Consequently, I cannot quote an exact price at this stage. We have not licensed the OS-9000 product yet as it could only be used on a small subset of Amiga machines (those with 68020 or better processors), and the 68000 product is still better supported (new products are usually available for OS-9/68000 before OS-9000). It is also quite a bit more expensive, so it will probably wait till there is some evidence of demand. We use the system in house on A1000, A2000 and A3000. It has also been used at Microware on A500s. It is a bit difficult to summarise the technical details in a couple of pages, but I would be happy to answer any specific questions you may have about the implementation or support for specific disk controllers and other hardware. As a very brief outline, the system takes over the Amiga completely so it retains its realtime qualities and performs like a very standard OS-9 environment. It requires no rom replacement or other hardware modification, so switching between OS-9 and Amigados (or any other operating system) requires only a re-boot. The Amiga display is supported as a colour text terminal with customizable emulation and font module support. It also supports multiple virtual screens much like that provided by Amiga Unix. Several graphical environments are available for OS-9, including Rave, X11, gwindows and MGR. However these are not currently supported for the Amiga display. We are looking at these but the main problem is the substantial price increase that would result and of course deciding on the most appropriate choice. Rave would allow CDI application compatibility which may be of interest to hobbyists and developers, X11 of course provides increased UNIX workstation compatibility, and gwindows/MGR a Mac style operating environment. A company in Switzerland have volunteered to undertake a port of MGR which I will be very interested to see. To summarise some answers to some common questions: Operating System Vers: Professional OS-9/68000 V2.4 Booting: Can boot from any floppy or hard disk OS9 Kickstart may be used on A1000 to gain an extra 256K of write-protectable ram. Supported by AmigaDOS Terminals: VT100 emulation on amiga display Full support for amiga serial port Driver for ASGD serial card available Commodore A2232 driver under development Disks: Internal floppy drive supported Primary format is amiga standard encoding OS-9 Universal format supported for compatibility Driver for A2090 HD available Driver for A2091/A3000/A590 HD available soon (new SCSI driver technology will support SCSI tape disk etc) Amiga Utilities: AmigaDOS file system access utility Convert amiga font files to OS9 font modules SSM: SSM may be used when hardware supports it. Price: US$600.00 We are currenty updating our licence to include the new Microware 'Ultra C' Ansi C compiler technology. This will add about US$150.00 to the price of a license. The compiler if purchased separately from Microware will be priced at US$1,300. This would seem like a good buy for professional users, but does increase the entry cost for hobyists. I would be interested in any thoughts you may have on this. Thank you again for your enquiry. I hope this information is of some assistance. Digby Tarvin Tesseract Pty Ltd 53 George St. REDFERN. I've got my maxcount set to 2048 to help eliminate the mouse locking problem. You may want to experiment with what's best for you. I'm not certain it's having /t2 in memory that fixes the mouse lockups or the fact that it's iniz'd that clears the problem. *- Steve -* #: 19339 S1/General Interest 17-Nov-93 18:20:12 Sb: #Repacking MM/1 question Fm: Zack Sessions 71532,1555 To: all I have a new PC case on order in which I plan to repack my MM/1a. Unfortunately, this requires a lot of disk space, RAM and CPU speed - I had to learn when I ported the 2.52 version to OS-9 about 6 month ago. This OS-9 version contains a large number of drivers, including drivers for the MGR window manager, and comes with three different binaries (68000, 68020 without and with FPU). It is available through the European Forum For OS-9 (EFFO). For those who want to do their own port: L. Peter Deutsch (the spirit behind Ghostscript) agreed to let OS-9 enter the list of officially supported operating systems from the next version onwards (to be released at end 1993). Irrespectively, EFFO will continue to distribute compiled binaries, fonts and other material that is needed to have Ghostscript running under OS-9. If the Calgary Tynet port "requires" you to set your terminal identifier to "O", then somethings wrong. Using "O" set your terminal to MARK/SPACE parity. It'll look fine for text messages, but you'll not be able to download any files. You should use the "A" option which saves parity and is what Bill as coded into the login script. This means that you are limited, using a cluster size of 1 and a sector size of 512 -- about 264 meg. However, you can increase this limit by: - increasing the sector size - increasing the cluster size (use -c with format) - partitioning the drive into 2 or more logical devices Hope this helps. #: 19458 S1/General Interest 09-Dec-93 21:19:22 Sb: #19424-SCSI Drives. Dosen't sound good .... but it may be the multipak that's hosed, not the controller. Have you considered plugging the controller into the CoCo3 to see if it works? (If this is a real old controller, don't bother. It will need the MPI for the 12 volts it requires. But if it's one of the newer, smaller controllers that only 5 volts, you should be in good shape. Do the drive lights light up immediately upon power up? If so, is it possible you've somehow flipped the cable around? This is indicative of having the cable switched. *- Steve -* #: 19530 S1/General Interest 25-Dec-93 10:42:21 Sb: Happy Holidays!
