GShell probably does, though, and if you type a command at the shell and *don't* terminate it with "&", then the shell will F$Wait. However, at *some* point, an F$Wait is a polite thing to do--do you really have an application in which the parent doesn't care whether the child succeeded or not? A child process in the DEAD state has all its resources save for the process descriptor given back to the system, so it's not using very much memory--but process descriptors *are* a finite resource, so a parent process should check on its children at least once in a while. (Is this a pain? Perhaps, but I can't think of any scheme that would let a process find out the exit status of its children and consume zero memory doing it.) I'm not sure how it determines the passing of a child, since if a process does have a child and you execute a F$Wait, your process will wait until the death of the first child process occurs. I would like to know how to do a "timed" F$Wait, where if a child is executing, the F$Wait doesn't continue to wait, it just returns to your program as if you don't have any children. This is how you get the "processes still active" message when you try to stop Gshell with child processes still running. You could setup a sortof timed wait by having the child process send a signal to the parent when it is just about ready to end. The parent can then setup a signal and using the signal() function, get interrupted when the child dies. The child would have to get the parent's pid from it' process descriptor. The parent, in turn, could keep a list of process id's that it forks so it knows when all of them are dead. On the other hand, I certainly understand Mr. Larson's position, and indeed have taken a similar position myself in a similar situation. UUCP, by its nature, potentially sends one's files off to another system, and without considerable care is a major potential security hole. If login is part of the package--well, login is the first line of defense for security, and any sort of back door in it is a major calamity. I'm certainly not implying anything about the package that Mark Griffith has spent so much time on. In fact, my inclination, by virtue of knowing how long Mark has been around, and how many programs that Mark has worked on to the benefit of the OS-9 community, is to trust the package. Mr. Larson, though, may not know Mark, and considering the potential for calamity, is understandably leery about installing something without source code to examine and compile. (The similar situation alluded to above was the (first) TOP release, which did not include code. TOP appears to be doing a lot for OS-9, too, but without knowing a lot more about them, I couldn't bring myself to trust their replacement login for OS-9/68000, for example. My understanding is that the later TOP releases included source, so my concerns aren't necessarily applicable any longer.) So...oops, that should read "did not include source code" above. Has anybody got one yet? Are they all they're cracked up to be? I'm REALLY concerned about software. Neat games and "multimedia" software (whatever that is) are fine, but what about the basics? A good mouse driven word processor, draw program, spreadsheet? The package from Microware looks really nice but is WAY to expensive for us nickel/dime types. I really want to buy one of these for OS-9 compatibility and speed (I do a lot of matrix math in grad school), but I'm not jumping until I'm SURE it will do the basics. It would also be very helpful if it could read/write MS-DOS and Mac disks and be compatible with the file structures of some of the more popular current programs. Any opinions from anybody on this? I knew nobody read Mac disks (even text files), but didn't know why. But what I'm really concerned about is software availability for OSK and that software's compatibility with other software in other operating systems. I mean using OSK spreadsheets, WP files, etc on a Mac or MS-DOS machine. From what I've seen of OSK software to date, much of it is fairly old, command-key-driven (like Wordstar) stuff. If these new machines are going to sell, they really need to concentrate on how their software is going to work and what else it can talk to. This is really an attempt to get Frank Hogg and Paul Ward thinking about the subject of end-user software for their new machines and what it's really going to do. I'm sure they've already thought about it some, but all the info I've seen here and in their sales brochures talks on and on about the hardware with no real discussion of a new generation of software That's what I'd like to see and what I'll have to see before I buy an MM/1 or TC70 Any other opinions? Randy. I run one of only three Macs in a Messy-DOS shop. Since OSK is a UNIX like OS, and there is really no Graphics Interface, it works mostly in text. (like *Star). File transport is not too great a problem. Remember, output can always and easily be routed to a file. What we really need is a packege like SMART that sells for $149 vice $895. Do you know anything about this? A GUI is a VERY convenient way to get around an operating system and to work with applications and is the way all software is going. If OSK doesn't have something similar, I'm afraid it will be left behind. One of the advantages of the Mac is the GUI and the consistency of "utilities" between applications. If we're starting a new generation of 68XXX machines with similar graphics capabilities, this kind of consistency in software development may make them the first true competitors to the Mac line. I understand that file transfer is as easy as you say between Mac and DOS systems. I do the same things every day myself. But one of the things that allows me to do it is the translators built into the software. From MacWrite II, I can save a file in nearly 20 different formats. I feel that new software developed for OSK must have some similar features so we can share info with the rest of the world. To date, it has seemed to me that the OS-9 community has been a relatively elite clique whose unity depended on being able to develop high powered software on relatively inexpensive hardware. If we're going to expand beyond that, we need to be able to talk to the world. As to SMART, I agree completely. For $1400, it'd better wash dishes, clean house, and have a built-in beer cooler. I came to the COCO and OSK for high power at low price. If new OSK stuff is going to cost that much I'll get a Mac. Do you run OSK on your Mac? I've seen the sales literature on it, but I'd like to hear about the performance from a third party. Thanks! I looks pretty much like OS-9. I would only reccommend it for a small office environment, with dedicated functionality, such as a dental office. You could easily have an inexpensive 3 terminal system. The biggest problem is, that since it runs as a Mac application, it's Hard Drives are Mac files, and limited to 32 meg. A 32 meg drive is not very large for today's data base applications. In the first place, it won't work. I don't see how Frank Hogg or MicroWare or anyone else can hope to produce something competitive with the Mac, and produce it cheaper than Apple does. After all, they have lots of resources, and certainly aren't going to take such a frontal assault lying down. You'd also be competing with Microsoft Windows and OS/2, which to me seems a little like challenging Paul Bunyan to a fist-fight. It sort of reminds me of a short stint I spent working for Heathkit. At the time, their audio line was being decimated by Japanese companies, who were providing superior performance, with all kinds of bells and whistles, at a lower cost, and you didn't have to build the thing! Heathkit's response was to try to add the same bells and whistles: Automatic circuitry, lots of knobs and LED's, etc. I pointed out to them that this seemed to me a fruitless endeavor. My words were, "You're never going to out-knob the Japanese." I suggested that Heathkit look for a niche market that the others weren't meeting ... specifically, those customers who don't want flash, but just good, clean audio with a minimum of gewgaws. (Natch, Heathkit ignored this advice.) Seems to me that we have the same situation here. I've relented enough to accept the fact that GUI's have certain things to offer, but I disagree that a Mac-like GUI is always the desired result. This is a different market, and in general the people who buy things like the TC70 and the MM/1 are those who, for whatever reason, don't _WANT_ what Apple and IBM have. The bottom line is: If I want a 68000-based system that emulates the Mac interface, I can buy it cheaper from Apple. Jack
